Lukas Neckermann was a keynote speaker at Quattroruote Day in Milan, celebrating Italy’s celebrated auto magazine’s 60th anniversary. On the eve of the 130th birthday of the internal-combustion engine that gave rise to individual, motorised mobility, Lukas suggested that it is now, however, on life-support. On-demand, shared mobility is becoming the mode of choice for urban-dwellers in growing megacities; progressively, this will be augmented by electric, autonomous pods and shuttles. The brand on the steering wheel is becoming irrelevant as it is replaced by the app on the smartphone.
On stage before Lukas was the heralded designer Walter de Silva (Alfa Romeo, SEAT, Volkswagen) – who also addressed the changes impending to automotive design in a new world with multimodal options. Lukas was followed by a speech and discussion with the legendary Luca di Montezemolo (Chairman of Ferrari for 23 years until 2014). Mr. di Montezemolo – while acknowledging that significant changes are impacting the automobile industry that he has come to know – pointed out that passion and a love of driving will remain at the heart of the most vaunted automotive brands.
